MacAnthony is a big fan of a competition Posh won in the 2013-14 season.

“It’s a competition that’s been good to us and not just because we won it once,” MacAnthony said.

“The prize money is worth having. You get £10k for winning a group match and £20k if you win in the knockout rounds.

“Last season we made about £88k and that’s all money that hasn’t been budgeted for. It’s extra cash.

“And there’s big value for our younger players.

“Last season we gave out 8-9 debuts to young players and still won all our group games. Our lads got a taste of a local derby against Cambridge and got to play against an Arsenal side and a couple of seasons ago we beat a Chelsea side valued at £30 million at Stamford Bridge.”

Posh manager Darren Ferguson added: “It’s a competition we want to go far in,”
