Peterborough United promotion hopes could yet be rekindled by Championship clubs

Peterborough United could be given a glimmer of hope of promotion from League One by a quirk in the EFL constitution.

A report in the Daily Mail yesterday (May 23) suggests Championship clubs have an effective veto on whether or not clubs in the lower division can curtail their season.

Changing EFL competition regulations requires support from at least 13 Championship clubs and a 51% majority from all 71 members of the EFL.

Therefore a positive vote from Leagues One and Two would not be sufficient to sanction the proposed move to a points-per-game dictating final positions if enough second tier clubs object.

Championship clubs are expected to try and complete their season and could expect Leagues One and Two to do the same.

If curtailment is voted down League One clubs could be forced to complete the current season.

League One clubs are currently in a period of reflection until 5pm on Tuesday (May 26) after which they will be expected to vote on either continuing or curtailing the current season. It’s expected a vote to curtail would win comfortably, but it could be June 1 before the result is confirmed as clubs will be given four-to-five days to vote.

League Two have already voted to curtail their season.

The Premier League could also throw a spanner in the works of those planning to claim promotion as not relegating teams this season remains an option.

That would confuse the promotion and relegation issues in the EFL divisions.
