Peterborough United pointers: ‘Franz’ at the back, Eisa’s timely reminder, newest signing will need time, Broom’s highlights reel and the club are right to let a legend leave

1) I note Posh El Presidente Darragh MacAnthony has christened Ronnie Edwards ‘Franz’ as in Beckenbauer. I’m not surprised. He reads the game well and is extremely cool in possession just like the German footballing general.

Edwards played in the middle of a back three and looked born to the role, but that’s not to say he’s ready for League One football. He’s not small, but he will need to bulk up, There were a couple of occasions he was knocked off the ball rather easily, but his potential was clear to see.

2) Keep an eye on teenager Flynn Clarke as well. He delivered a lively display at number 10 in the second game today highlighted by the pass to Mo Eisa for that team’s second goal.

3) Talking of Eisa he gave a timely demonstration of his greatest skill with a composed side-footed finish into the corner. He can make the hardest job in football look easy and with Jonson Clarke-Harris looking off the pace in his first outing for the club there’s every chance Eisa will get the nod to start next Saturday’s (September 5) first competitive match of the season.

4) Clarke-Harris appeared heavy-legged at times and made little impact alongside Siriki Dembele in the first match. Obviously they will need to work on that partnership as the new man is a completely different player to the departing Ivan Toney. He’s quicker with a better left foot, but not as good at holding the ball up and bringing others into the game. It’s not fair to judge anyone after one game though. The 90 minutes against better defenders than he will meet in League One will have done Clarke-Harris plenty of good.

5) The goals video package Cheltenham Town put out when Ryan Broom left them for Posh included quality goals struck with either foot after cutting inside his marker. And lo and behold he did just that to deliver a screamer to get off the mark in a Posh shirt. It was a very promising moment for a team expected to miss the buzz and speed of Sammie Szmodics.

6) I do hope George Boyd isn’t leaving Posh under a cloud. He didn’t appear in today’s game whereas another player transfer-listed yesterday, Louis Reed, did. Boyd’s great service to the club far outweighs one disappointing season and it’s tough to argue against the club’s decision to let him go. Posh boss Darren Ferguson wants speed and aggression in his forward line and they are not strengths of the club legend. Football is a tough, ruthless business as Boyd knew before yesterday’s news.
