The 30 year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the 2020-21 season and not even regular injury issues will stop Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony offering an extension.

Thompson played just 19 games for Posh last season after joining the club in August. He has been outstanding this season, but is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem. He’s expected back for the League One game at AFC Wimbledon on December 1.

“When he’s fit there is no-one better than Nathan,” MacAnthony stated on his popular ‘Hard Truth’ podcast. “If we can keep him fit he would be a valuable asset. He is among the best right-backs in League One and he can also play well as a right-sided centre-back in a three.

“We tried to sign him a few years back, but we couldn’t get near his wages and he went to Portsmouth instead.

“He left Portsmouth before the start of last season and trained with a Championship club, but they didn’t offer him anything so he thought he was going back to Pompey.

“His agent than rang us and said he was available and we jumped at the chance to get him. We gave him a two-year deal and we will offer him a new contract when this one runs out at the end of the season.”
