The 23 year-old has been a surprise starter in the centre of midfield in the last two Posh matches.

Reed failed to make a single first-team appearance last season after the disappointing 1-0 loss at AFC Wimbledon on January 18.

He was one of four players placed on the transfer list at the beginning of August, but he’s forced his way back into manager Darren Ferguson’s plans and will now be named in the club’s salary cap squad later this month,

“I was surprised to be given another chance,” Reed admitted. “But delighted also. I was disappointed to be told I could leave, but it’s not in my nature to give up.

“I just got my head down, worked hard and did my best in training and pre-season.

“After I played and scored against Burton (in the EFL Trophy) the manager said he wanted me to stay and fight for my place and I’m happy to do that. He made no promises, but he’s happy to have four strong midfielders fighting for two places now.

“It’s a bit of a U-turn, but I‘m determined to make the most of it. This is a good side with a great chance of winning promotion. We’ve been unlucky this season so far, but we will turn it around soon enough. It’s another tough game against Swindon on Saturday (October 3). They’ve started the season well and they have some good players. I know striker Tyler Smith well as we were together at Sheffield United and he’s a good goalscorer.”

Reed almost added to his Burton free kick goal at Sunderland last weekend with another superbly struck set-piece which rattled the crossbar.

“I’ve been practising free kicks for years, but when Marcus Maddison was here I never got to take one!” Reed added.

“I scored a couple when I was at Chesterfield and I often stay late with Mark Robson (coach) to practice.”
