Peterborough United matches postponed due to coronavirus

Peterborough United’s next three matches have been postponed after a player tested positive for Covid-19, while three others are also showing symptoms.

Posh were due to play Ipswich at home tomorrow (Saturday), followed by a trip to Gillingham on Boxing Day with Charlton then pencilled into visit the Weston Homes Stadium on December 29.

The club, who currently sit third in League One, will now have to reschedule the matches which will mean increased fixture congestion during a season where there are already more midweek matches than normal.

Posh’s next fixture is now scheduled to be a home match against Doncaster Rovers on January 2.

A club statement said: “Peterborough United can confirm that our scheduled Sky Bet League One fixtures with Ipswich Town, Gillingham and Charlton Athletic have been postponed.

“The club can confirm that an unnamed player has tested positive for Covid-19 and three others are displaying symptoms. The safety and health of our players is paramount. The club have notified the EFL of the postponements.

“The next scheduled league fixture is on 2nd January 2021 against Doncaster Rovers at the Weston Homes Stadium. The club will be making no further comment.”

It was announced yesterday that Peterborough was moving into Tier 3, meaning that the club would no longer be able to allow fans into the stadium.

Club co-owner Darragh MacAnthony, who has repeatedly criticised the Government’s decision to stop fans from attending matches, tweeted ahead of the announcement about the postponements: “And the Hits just keep on coming Pouting face. I need to find a new Hobby/Interest/Passion in 2021 as this football stuff is making me old too quickly Flushed faceFace with tears of joy. Today I am waving a mini white flag. Monday I shall go again. Have a good weekend everybody as best you can.”
