Peterborough United manager wants more improvement as the League One leaders arrive at the Weston Homes Stadium, a win would take Posh back into a play-off place and a key player returns

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has urged his players to use a handsome 4-0 win over high-flying Wycombe on Tuesday (January 21) as the springboard for a successful play-off push.

Posh gained relief from the end of a morale and confidence-sapping run of two points and one goal in six League One matches with a fluent display against the team in second place.

But Ferguson knows his team will need to improve again to get the better of a Rotherham United team who have won their last five League One games to sit pretty at the top of the table. Posh host the Millers on Saturday (January 25) less than a month after suffering a 4-0 battering in the reverse fixture.

Posh will be boosted by the expected return of on-loan Leicester City player Josh Knight after a 10-week absence through injury.

“We were good against Wycombe, but it was just one game and three points. It’s vital we now turn the result and performance into a run of positive results.

“We now have to make sure it’s not a one-off and I’m sure it won’t be.

“We have good players here and now we have confidence and a bit of momentum going forward.

“Rotherham are the most consistent team in League One which is why they are top. We couldn’t have had a harder game, but we go into it in a much better frame of mind.

“Rotherham are big strong and powerful and they gave us a right beating at their place so we feel we owe them one.

“They present a strong, physical challenge, but they can also play so we will need to step up again from Tuesday’s good performance.

“It’s a huge game for us as if we can beat the leaders straight after beating the team in second it really would set us up for the rest of the season.

“It’s a good game for Josh Knight to come back into. We have missed his energy. He’s quick and strong and those attributes would be handy against a team like Rotherham.

“He’ll be ready to play in midfield or as a centre-back. Leicester wouldn’t have sent him back to us if he wasn’t fully fit.”

Remarkably Posh will return to the League One play-off places if they win on Saturday as fourth-placed Oxford and seventh-placed Portsmouth are without fixtures.

Rotherham are expected to bring over 1500 fans to the game.
