A win secured by superb goals from Jack Taylor and Dan Butler kept Posh on top of the table. They’ve now won seven and drawn one of their last eight third tier games.

Butler is the 14th different Posh player to score this season.

“We’ve scored with two great hits,” Ferguson said. “But that was just an outstanding all-round team performance.

“Considering how many games these players have had to take part in it was an excellent effort. We looked fresh and strong for 90 minutes. We looked so good there was no need to make a substitution.

“This was a big game for us. We wanted to keep the momentum going ahead of a little break we now have from League One action.

“And the players responded so well. The spirit, character and fight in this team compares very favourably to some of the top sides I’ve had here in the past. You can see they want success very badly.

“We could have had four or five goals tonight. We were running all over them at the end, but we also defended very well when we had to against a team who can be very dangerous. Our goalkeeper is so calm and composed as well so we have a lot going for us at the moment.

“There were no gaps in our side. We looked solid and well organised,

“The run we’re on is a credit to the whole squad and to the staff, but there’s still a long way to go. We mustn’t take our foot off the gas.”

Posh will make changes to their starting line-up for the first round FA Cup tie at League One rivals Oxford United on Saturday (November 7). Centre-forward Jonson Clarke-Harris is certain to be rested.

“Jonson put in another good shift tonight,” Ferguson added. “He’s scoring goals, but the rest of the players appreciate what else he does for the team. He will be one I leave out on Saturday.”

Posh are at Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy next Tuesday (November 10) before returning to League One action at Crewe on November 14 when Taylor will be away on international duty.
