Peterborough United manager delighted with victory, but he knows much improvement is needed to become promotion challengers

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson was delighted with a 3-1 win over Swindon Town at the Weston Homes Stadium today (October 3), but he admitted his side must improve considerably to challenge for promotion from League One.

Posh maintained their 100% home record thanks to two goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and another from substitute Ryan Broom. Both players were claiming their first goals for the club following summer arrivals.

Swindon had taken advantage of a poor Posh start to lead at the interval before Ferguson’s men secured a seventh straight home win in the Football League, something that hadn’t happened for 36 years.

Ferguson was forced into a formation change at the break. The win moved Posh up 11 places to eight after two wins and two defeats in four matches.

“The most important thing is winning,” Ferguson stated, “And we found a way to to do that. In fact in the end it was quite comfortable.

“But there is plenty for us to work on, There is plenty we need to improve on if we are to get where we want to be.

“We were very lucky to only be 1-0 down at half-time. The things we worked on we didn’t do well enough. Our decision-making was poor, our passing was poor and they kept counter-attacking on us as a result.

“We always have a plan B if things aren’t going well and fortunately it worked for us today.

“We had the boost of an early goal and then we had a decision go our way with a penalty. I was pleased for Jonson to get his first goals, The boy’s got quality and he’s a real handful, and Ryan Broom was outstanding when he went on. We needed some energy and he gave it to us. It was a fantastic performance from him.

“I’m delighted we won and we showed great character to stay in the game and then come from behind to win again, but we can’t disguise the fact we need to be better. We need to be braver and we need to accept teams will give us problems and just solve them more quickly. It shouldn’t need me to change things to make us play well.

“Something isn’t quite right with us at the moment. It can’t be a confidence thing, certainly not at home where we have been very good for a while now.

“It’s up to me and my staff to work that out as we need to get on a consistent winning run as soon as possible.”

Striker Ricky-Jade Jones was left out of the squad because of a dead leg and will also miss Tuesday’s (October 6) EFL Trophy match with Fulham Under 21s at London Road.

Defender Niall Mason was absent today because a mild concussion picked up in a reserve team game against Gillingham on Tuesday. He could play against Fulham.

Posh are next in League One action at local rivals Northampton Town next Saturday (October 10).
