Peterborough United manager claims a lack of ruthlessness in both penalty areas ruined a good performance

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson insists his side will win many more games than they lose if they repeat the level of performance they delivered in defeat at AFC Wimbledon tonight (December 2).

Posh lost 2-1 after failing to take their scoring chances in the first-half and then conceding two goals in eight second-half minutes before a delicious free kick from Jonson Clarke-Harris gave his side late hope.

“We should have won this game comfortably,” Ferguson insisted. “The performance level was very good, but we weren;t ruthless enough in both penalty areas.

“We should have been 3-0 up at half-time. We had three great chances. They weren’t half chances either, they were good chances. If we take the lead we probably go on and win. Ryan Broom played very well, but he missed an open goal and Sammie Szmodics missed two chances. It will turn for Sammie, He has to start scoring soon.

“And then we let in a soft first goal and an unfortunate second one. When you are not taking chances or keeping clean sheets you will have a problem. We only have one clean sheet in the last seven matches. Scoring the first goal is always important and it gave them a lift.l

“The reaction from the FA Cup defeat was good though. I knew it would be. We moved the ball well and gave them no end of problems. Jonson and Sirki linked up well again, but it’s not falling for us at the moment.

“Even after Jonson scored I felt we could win, but we ran out of time.

“Anyone watching the game would have seen we deserved to win, A draw would have been unlucky. If we perform to this standard we will win many more games than we lose. The players just need to keep believing.”

Full-back Dan Butler missed the game with a calf problem. He is expected to miss the next three League One games.

Striker Mo Eisa was dropped from the squad altogether.
