But Ferguson believes his squad will take any reduction in their stride after holding one-to-one meetings with all his players in the wake of football’s lockdown because of the coronavirus.

The Posh boss insists it’s right for the club to look after the interests of the entire staff and not just the players.

“I was very encouraged by the response of the players when I spoke to them about wages,” Ferguson said. “They are a very responsible group and they recognise the current situation affects everyone at the club and not just the playing staff.

“I believe wage deferrals are inevitable to help clubs survive.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said ‘99%’ of the club’s playing staff were positive about deferring wages when interviewed on talkSPORT yesterday (April 2). He said one player ‘acting on youthful exuberance’ wanted to discuss the matter with his agent and the PFA.

MacAnthony said: “The reaction of our players was a real positive for me. The players understand they will get their money eventually.

“Players are a protected species in football. They always get paid. I am pleased our players have taken such a responsible approach. The club has hundreds of employees to look after.”

Posh paid their March wage bill in full.
