Peterborough United manager believes a ‘hiding’ at Crewe could turn out to be a good thing

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson believes losing so badly at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday could help the Posh promotion chances from League One.

Ferguson described the 2-0 defeat at Gresty Road as a ‘hiding’ and he’s expecting a positive reaction from his players when Blackpool visit the Weston Homes Stadium for a League One fixture on Saturday.

The Posh boss gave his squad a strong talking to straight after the game at Crewe, but today (November 16) has been about preparing for a shot at redemption.

Posh are still top of the League One table ahead of two home matches. Plymouth Argyle also visit the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday, November 24 (7pm kick off).

“We’ve pressed the reset button today,” Ferguson said. “It was a hiding at Crewe. Maybe not in terms of chances created, but it was in terms of control of the match. We had none. It was all Crewe who played very well.

“But there’s no point in dwelling on the game. I said my piece to the players after the game and now we have to make sure we redeem ourselves as it wasn’t good enough.

“We have lost three times in League One this season. We were unlucky at Sunderland, but we have thoroughly deserved to lose the other two at Accrington and at Crewe.

“But we are still top and we have been on a fantastic run ahead of two home games. The performance at Crewe could even work in our favour because it was proof what happens when our standards drop. If that happens we lose. We will lose games this season, but we cannot afford to lose in the manner we did on Saturday. The players are aware of that and I’m sure there will be a reaction against Blackpool.”

Ferguson attracted attention at Gresty Road for walking towards the dressing room area before the final whistle had blown, but he played down the significance of that act today.

“I asked the fourth official how long there was to go and he said 20 seconds,” Ferguson added. “I thought I might as well start leaving now. We didn’t look like we would score so I started to walk off. That’s all really.”
