Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony made the revelation in the latest edition of his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast.

Toney was given permission to speak to the unnamed club, but as yet nothing has been finalised and the 24 year-old remains at the Weston Homes Stadium.

MacAnthony insists the agreed fee was considerably more than the £5 million figure bandied about on social media and in newspaper reports in recent weeks and he still expects other clubs to make a move for player Posh value at around £10 million.

Celtic, Rangers, Brighton, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Derby are among the clubs linked with Toney.

MacAnthony said: “It’s been a frustrating time with regard to Ivan. I’ve had Celtic fans telling me we shouldn’t be asking £5 million for a League One player, but believe me the deal we negotiated a couple of weeks ago was for a lot more than that.

“Ivan was given permission to speak to the club but so far nothing has happened.

“There are other clubs negotiating to buy him. Others are going to join the party. There are Premier League clubs having recruitment meetings in the next few days.

“There’s a big club, which isn’t in England, involved, but we won’t have our pants pulled down on the fee. We promised Ivan last January he could leave if we didn’t go up and he can, but for the right fee. He’s worth what we say he is worth. We are like the Mounties, we always get our man and we always get the price we want for our man.

“The manager would like the deal done quickly so he can get on with things. I get that, but the manager doesn’t pay the bills.

“I make the football decisions and I’m very lucky to have two wealthy partners who will back me so we are very relaxed about him staying for another year and helping us win promotion. He might even play for us this Saturday.”

MacAnthony insists Posh can sign players before Toney leaves and the club have failed to land one target.

“We tried to get a specific type player which wasn’t dependent on Ivan going, but his club think we’re awash with money,” MacAnthony added. “I don’t begrudge clubs asking for big money as we do the same, but everyone has a price.”
