Peterborough United fans didn’t hold back after the win over Charlton: ‘Football 1, Thuggery 0, Charlton were vile and despicable, referee was abysmal’

Peterborough United fans launched a Twitter tirade towards Charton Athletic and referee Sam Purkiss despite Posh beating the Addicks 2-1 at the Weston Homes Stadium last night (January 19).

Charlton’s roughouse tactics and the weakness of Purkiss attracted as much comment as another two goals for Sammie Szmodivcs and a very important victory.

‘Despicable opponents aided by ref. JCH, Sammie and defence superb. This performance, particularly second-half, has convinced me we have what it takes to go up.’

Biggest win of the season against a side who can play, but not under that manager. The referee was an embarrassment. If there was an assessor around you’ll not see him again. Fair play to the players and the management team for the changes. Still shaking.’

@adi_mowles

‘Good second half. JCH immense. Reece Brown cool when he came on. Ref was abysmal. Shouldn’t be reffing at this level. Great to have Sammie back firing. His season started in January last year.’

@the_real_sniffs

‘Charlton dark forces don’t work all the time. Battle from start until the finish. How there weren’t any red cards is beyond me.’

@DannyBoyMiller

‘Posh patient and ruthless. Referee dreadful, Charlton desperately horrible.’

@CHAMM24

‘Won the battle. Don’t usually.’

‘Great battle from Posh. JCH and Sammie were unplayable 2nd half. Young Burrows was excellent. Charlton the dirtiest, anti-football side I have seen for a long time.’

@milanvanco1

‘Well at least Lee Bowyer can’t have a go at the Charlton players for backing out of tackles tonight!’

@PaulGc84

‘Posh: professional. Charlton: embarrassing. Ref: easily swayed’.

@william5001

‘Turning point - Charlton missing a free header from 6 yards just before Sammie’s first. Charlton’s press very good 1st half, albeit sometimes illegal. Posh relished the battle 2nd half and deseverdly won. Weak referee more interested in dissent than fouls.’

@PoshboyAlan

‘Posh playing out of their skins Szmodics amazing again.’

‘Justice was done in the end, battling performance that isn’t always seen and gives us plenty of hope in this unique season on a dreadful pitch.’

@Deepingposh

Ref a bloody shambles, Szmodics a dream and Charlton, vile just vile. One of the best 2nd half 45 mins I’ve seen from Posh.’

@abilew123

‘Great result, stood up well to their physical game plan. Worst ref I’ve seen in a long time.’

@Poshlawts

‘Posh = determined & disciplined. I’m not sure you will be able to publish words which describe the referee or Charlton’s game plan, let’s just say the final result was justice.’

‘1st half Posh very negative, Charlton play-acting and managing the shocking ref all game. 2nd half after the formation change and subs, Posh were superb.’

@poshcricketer

‘Justice! JCH and Sammie outstanding 2nd Half. Thought Beevers was excellent too. Posh don’t win that game in the previous few seasons.’

@philbeck1981

‘Football 1, thuggery 0. Ref crap.’

@amwright40

@robconPuFc

‘Tonight JCH became JCB.’

@TobyWoody

‘Charlton disgraceful, Posh fantastic, ref sacked in the morning.’

‘The last time I saw the pitch looking that bad was back in 2000, if only there was a positive outcome at the end of that season to be a good omen.’
