Prime Minister Boris Johnson made the revelation during a detailed statement on the next stage for post-lockdown Britain this morning (July 17).

Pilots will take place from August 1, but all football stadium reopenings would be subject to coronavirus guidelines.

“We will pilot larger gatherings in venues like sports stadiums with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn,” said Johnson on Friday.

“From October, we intend to bring back audiences in stadiums.

“Again, these changes must be done in a Covid-secure way, subject to the successful outcome of pilots.”

Posh expect to start their League One season on September 12 with a Carabao Cup tie scheduled for September 5 and a Leasing.com Trophy tie set to be played on September 8/9.

It’s understood some lower division clubs don’t want to start playing until fans are back in grounds.

Posh haven’t played competitively since March 7.

More to come.
