Peterborough United deserved all the flak that came their way at the weekend, but they remain positive and confident

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has remained positive about his side’s League One promotion prospects ahead of tonight’s League One home game against Plymouth Argyle (November 24, 7pm), despite a big dip in form.

Posh followed a 2-0 loss at Crewe with a 2-1 home reverse at the hands of Blackpool - a first home defeat of 2020 - to drop down to second in the table.

Posh played poorly in both matches, but they could return to the top with a win tonight and if leaders Hull City fail to win at third-placed Ipswich Town.

Football is so fickle,” Ferguson stated. “One week you’re perceived to be the best and the next week you’re the worst. It shouldn’t work like that. Of course the last two performances have been unacceptable and we deserved all the criticism, but if we win tonight we will be back up to two points a game which is promotion form and we will have taken 25 points out of a possible 33 which is a fantastic run. We then have a great chance of reaching the third round of the FA Cup and that would be a great start to any season.

“There’s no panic here. I’m staying positive, but it’s my job to work out why we’ve been so far off it and to put it right.

“We lost our rhythm when we had the break from League One matches. We gave a very mature performance in winning at Bristol Rovers, but then we played two cup games, we lost Nathan Thompson and we then played poorly two games in a row.

“I don’t think there’s anything dramatic or drastic needed. We just need to do certain things a bit better. It ciuld be teams have watched us and worked out a way to stop us so it’s up to us to combat.”

Posh will be without injury victims Joe Ward, Nathan Thompson, Ricky-Jade Jones and Flynn Clarke tonight. Idris Kanu or Ryan Broom will replace Ward from Saturday’s beaten team.
