Peterborough United chairman to represent six promotion contenders at crunch League One meeting to push for the 2019-20 season to be completed

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony will speak up for several League One promotion contenders who don’t want the 2019-20 season declared null and void at a crunch EFL clubs meeting tomorrow (May 15).

MacAnthony, who has been the most vocal public advocate for keeping the season alive, took to social media tonight to announce he has been approached by Oxford, Fleetwood, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Portsmouth to state the case for completing the League One campaign when it is safe to do so.

Stories continue to circulate in the national press of the inevitability of Leagues One and Two being halted and a weighted points-per-game being employed to determine promotion winners.

But MacAnthony tweeted tonight: “I have been asked to relay this message on behalf of Oxford, Fleetwood, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Ipswich and Posh to the EFL and media ahead of our League One meeting tomorrow.

“We as a collective are united in our goal to finish this season. We have no desire to void the season or letting a points-per-game scenario or a computer decide our footballing fate.

“For our fans/staff & for the integrity of our sport we are all looking forward to completing our pending fixtures/season under guidance from the EFL at a time it is deemed safe to do so. Thank you for your time.”

Oxford are currently third in League One with Fleetwood (4th), Portsmouth (5th), Posh (6th) and Sunderland (7th) all close behind.

Current top two Coventry and Rotherham are expected to be promoted if the season is voided alongside one other team.

Play-off matches are also an option.
