Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony made the revelation during an interview on talkSPORT yesterday (April 15) and expressed his pride at their actions.

The trio made their offer after the EFL and PFA had recommended wages be deferred by no more than 25% and only for one month.

MacAnthony expects other Posh players to now follow suit.

“That 25% for one month is nowhere near enough for the clubs,” MacAnthony said. “So I when I contacted my manager and he immediately offered to take a deferral of 50% and that my captain and my most experienced player had done the same I was extremely proud of them. It was lovely to hear.

“It’s an intelligent way of looking at the situation. It’s about helping the football club and the community. They all realise there is more to a football club than just its players.

“They also know they will get the money back. It’s not a pay cut, it’s a deferral of money until the situation improves and then the club pays it back.

“I presume others will now follow the example they have set. Some might not want to take a 50% deferral, but they will take more than 25%.

“If any of my players are struggling financially I will help them. I’ve given loans to 15 players in my time as chairman.”

MacAnthony also revealed Posh have been speaking to League One rivals Gillingham about a friendly when clubs are back in training, possibly in the middle of May.
