Peterborough United boss backs Sammie Szmodics to come good sooner rather than later

That’s the opinion of manager Darren Ferguson who hauled the 25 year-old forward player off 20 minutes from the end in the 2-0 defeat at Crewe on Saturday when Posh were chasing goals.

Szmodics, who was outstanding when playing for Posh on loan from Bristol City last season, has scored just one League One goal this season since a near £1 million summer transfer from Ashton Gate, a last-minute winner against Fleetwood on September 19. His only other goal this term arrived in a 4-2 EFL Trophy win at home to Fulham Under 21s.

“We have a very good player in Sammie,” Ferguson insisted. “He knows his level of performance at Crewe wasn’t good enough, but that will change soon. I’d expect him to go on and have another good season for us.

“He had a couple of chances at Crewe, but I took him off as I needed to get Mo Eisa on, someone who can always nick a goal out of nothing. And Mo did very well. He set up a chance for Jonson Clarke-Harris and almost scored himself, but he slipped.

“Ryan Broom is another one who is close to playing and there will be changes very soon if we keep playing like we did at the weekend. I can’t just leave it.”
