Oxford United boss believes his side couldn’t have been handed a more difficult first round tie than one against Peterborough United

Playing Peterborough United is the hardest possible FA Cup first round tie according to Oxford United manager Karl Robinson.

As current League One table toppers Posh are the highest ranked team in the competition, but they are expected to field a much-changed side at the Kassam Stadium tomorrow (November 7, 3pm).

Robinson will also shuffle his pack, but he remains keen on another good run after they reached the fourth round last season before losing in extra time to Premier League Newcastle United in a replay.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “Would we like another run? Yes. “Is it a necessity? No, but we’re desperate to win, as you’d imagine. I love the FA Cup.

“The big thing for me is we have players who knock on my door on a consistent basis saying they should be playing.

“This is their chance to prove to me they can hold the shirt down.

“The pressure is more on the players who take that responsibility at the weekend.

“Managers pick the players they think are ready at that time.

“In this instance it’s players who deserve it because they’ve trained hard.

“Other people have been doing OK to keep their shirt, so this is the best chance for them (the fringe players) to really nail down an opportunity to take a shirt.

“It’s the hardest draw, because they’re top, so are the highest-ranked club in the competition at this stage.

“We’ve just got to make sure we approach it in the right way and make sure it’s just as difficult for them as they will make it difficult for us.”

There are no replays on this season’s FA Cup so extra time and penalties will be used to determine the winner if necessary tomorrow.
