Match-winner Sam happy as Peterborough United show their 'nasty' side

Goal hero Sam Szmodics says Saturday's last-gasp win over Fleetwood Town proves Peterborough United have proved they can be a 'nasty team' and that they know how to 'win ugly'.

In a game of few chances, Posh scored twice in stoppage time to claim a 2-1 victory, with Jack Taylor cancelling out Callum Camps' opening goal before Szmodics won it in the dying seconds.

It was a performance that was miles away from the free-flowing attacking football Posh want to play, but on an afternoon when there was plenty of niggle in a scrappy game, the players dug in to secure a crucial first win of the Sky Bet League One win of the season.

Darren Ferguson's also men struggled as they were beaten at Accrington on the first day of the season, and although they were nowhere near their best against Fleetwood, they found a way to win it.

"It wasn't the prettiest game, but we kept fighting to the end," said Szmodics, who signed for the club permanently from Bristol City in the summer, having enjoyed a loan spell at the Weston Homes Stadium last season.

"We know what Fleetwood are about, and there was a lot of controversial decisions, but we kept fighting.

"It wasn't a great footballing team performance, but we showed we can be a nasty team and win the game another way.

"It was an ugly game, but we showed our ugly side. We kept grinding away, we went toe-to-toe with them and we have come out on top.

"We have picked up three points and we want to make this stadium a fortress this season.

"We want teams to come here and find it tough, and fair play to Fleetwood, I thought they were very good in possession, but we had god shape and they couldn't really break us down.

"They have scored the goal, but I don't think Christy (Pym) has had to make another save, and we have got the three points which is what counts."

His last-gasp winner sparked wild celebrations in the Posh camp, and Szmodics added: "The boys were saying that we haven't had a feeling like that for a while, and I don't think we have come from behind to win for a long time.

"So to do that in the second game of the season, and get the three points was fantastic."
