Maddison has been without a club since his Posh contract expired this summer. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City in the Championship, but declined to play for ‘The Tigers’ when football returned after lockdown.

The 27 year-old turned down a move to Charlton, who were then in the Championship, in January. He spent part of this pre-season with Southern League side Peterborough Sports.

Maddison was a ‘Marmite’ figure during his 249 appearances in six years at Posh. He scored 62 goals, many of them spectacular, and contributed close to 80 goal assists, but his attitude and workrate were often questioned.

Maddison, who has signed a one-year contract at Charlton, could make his debut at home to boyhood club Sunderland on Saturday (October 3). Posh signed him from Gateshead in 2014.

Charlton visit Posh on December 29 with the return game at the Valley on April 24.
