From London Road to Old Trafford to Fulbridge Road and now to Stamford for goal-poaching goalkeeper

Ex-Peterborough United player Luke Steele has continued his dramatic switch from goalkeeper to goal-poacher with a debut hat-trick for Peterborough Northern Star Reserves in a Peterborough League Division One match on Saturday (December 12).

But it promises to be a short-lived Star career as Steele today joined Northern Premier League side Stamford AFC and could make his debut in tomorrow’s (December 15, 7.45) FA Trophy clash with Kidderminster Harriers at the Zeeco Stadium.

Local lad Steele, who started his professional goalkeeping career with Posh before moving to Manchester United in a £500k transfer in 2002 after just two appearances for his hometown club, has been scoring freely in the Spalding Sunday League with Jubilee FC.

Steele (36) scored all the goals, including a last-minute winner, as a new-look side pipped FC Peterborough 3-2 at Fulbridge Road to claim just a second win of the season.

“It was an important win,” Steele said. “It’s a fantastic bunch of lads who were thrown together at short notice.”

Steele has scored nine goals in six matches for table-topping Jubilee FC, including five in one match.

The former Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton student played 389 professional matches as a ‘keeper, although none for United, in a career that also included spells at Coventry, West Brom, Barnsley, Bristol City. Nottingham Forest and Millwall as well as Greek side Panathinaikos.

Steele’s new career was launched by accident.

He said: “My electrician was round and said, ‘look do you fancy playing for a Sunday league side?’

“I said yes, and the next thing you know I’m signing up. I told them I didn’t want to play in goal and they gave me the number nine shirt.

“I’m absolutely addicted to playing up front now.”

Steele has revealed he was close to returning to Posh in the summer, but decided against it as he was unsure as to how often he would play.

Posh then went on to sign Hungarian youth international Dan Gyollai as back-up to first choice Christy Pym.
