Gyollai was culpable for two Burton goals in a 3-3 draw, but he saved the visitors’ fifth penalty from Ciaran Gilligan to seal a 5-4 win, and an extra point, on spotkicks for Posh.

Posh were perfect from 12 yards with Harrison Burrows, Ethan Hamilton, Louis Reed, Mo Eisa and Flynn Clarke all scoring.

Clarke, Reed and Niall Mason scored for Posh in 90 minutes. It was the first goals for the club for Clarke and Mason.

Posh led 2-0 and trailled 3-2 before Mason headed an equaliser 20 minutes from time.

It took 17 year-old Clarke under three minutes of his full debut to score.

But then he does come from good striking stock being the grandson of former Posh and Northern Ireland forward Colin Clarke.

Clarke junior received plenty of help mind from a fellow 17 year-old as Burton Albion goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe allowed a tame poke at goal following Idris Kanu’s right-wing cross to squirm under his body.

Burton should have already been in front as Steven Lawless missed a sitter at the back post in the second minute, but Posh took control after taking the lead and added a second goal in the 23rd minute thanks to a high-class 22-yard free kick from Reed.

Kanu had almost made it 2-0 as Sharman-Lowe lost his grip on another inoffensive shot and Burrows came close to a third Posh goal after a sweeping move out from the back.

Burrows accepted Reed’s pass, cut inside his man and swerved a right-foot shot from the edge of the penalty area just past a post.

Centre forward Jonson Clarke-Harris made his competitive debut for Posh and linked up play nicely. He created a shooting chance for Serhat Tasdemir after a poor ball out of defence from former Posh defender Michael Bostwick, but Sharman-Lowe boosted his own confidence with a fine low save.

Burton started to extert some pressure towards the end of the half helped by some wicked set piece deliveries. Bostwick should have scored from one of them, but headed over from close range.

The visitors claimed the goal their pressure deserved when Lawless made up for his earlier miss by converting ex-Posh full-back Colin Daniel’s cross in the final minute of the half.

Posh made 10 changes from their weekend Carabao Cup team, while Burton made five.

Clarke-Harris was withdrawn at half-time in a planned move. Eisa replaced him.

Burton started the second-half well and equalised in the 52nd minute when Joe Powell’s free kick from out wide caught Gyollai napping and crept inside his near post.

And Powell struck again three minutes later after Burton had won the ball back high up the pitch, but his shot was straight at Gyollai who somehow let it slip through his grasp and into the corner of the net.

Posh responded well to falling behind with Ethan Hamilton prominent and after his low deflected shot was gathered by Sharman-Lowe, defender Mason struck.

It was a surprise to see one of three centre-backs pop up the penalty area, but his header from a cross from Burrows was steered into the corner of the net.

Burton finished the game strongly and almost won the game three minutes from time with a near post header from Tom Hewlett, but his effort drifted just wide.

It was the last action of a competitive match, apart from the spot-kicks.
