LIVE: Full-time: Peterborough United 1, Coventry City 2: Posh beaten despite Broom’s brilliant finish

Peterborough United were beaten 2-1 by Coventry City in game one of their double header at the Weston Homes Stadium today (August 29), despite a stunning fiinish from summer signing Ryan Broom.

Broom pounced on a loose ball after Frankie Kent delivered a fine tackle well inside the Coventry half. He took the ball between two defenders before lashing home with a fierce right foot shot.

Broom’s goal cancelled out a fine 56th-minute strike from former Posh forward Matt Godden, but the visitors deservedly won the game seven minutes from time when a shot from Callum O’Hare was deflected past Posh goalkeeper Christy Pym from the last of a succession of Coventry corners.

Posh expected a tough test in their final pre-season game of the summer and they certainly received one against a slick Championship side.

Coventry dominated the second period with Declan Drysdale missing a sitter with his head before striking the outside of the post with another header. New signing Tyler Walker also tested Pym with a fine strike.

Posh offered little in return with the service to the front two of new signing Jonson Clarke-Harris and Siriki Dembele pretty poor throughout.

Posh fielded what looked suspiciously like their first choice startling line-up, but didn’t deliver a single shot on target in the first-half despite some neat approach play.

Coventry created the better chances with Godden particularly lively. He volleyed wide after a terrific cross from newcomer Leo Ostigard and saw another first-time shot deflected wide by Kent.

Clarke-Harris looked like the run out would do him good. His most threatening moment arrived on the quarter hour when his free kick from 20 yards was deflected wide by the wall.

Posh won several corners in the first period with Mark Beevers miscuing the best of them.

Posh generally defended well, but Coventry did sneak in behind the wing-backs on occasion. Pym dealt well with the crosses.

Godden’s goal arrived after O’Hare had nutmegged Kent and deliverd a precise pass which was lashed past Pym with a first-time shot,
