The late, great Tommy Robson on FA Cup banana skins: ‘We went up there very complacent and we got stuffed!’

In their own Football League era Peterborough United have played non-league clubs in the FA Cup on 46 occasions.

But the big wins against the likes of Harlow Town (7-0, 1991), 6-0 (Redditch, 1971) and Staines Town (5-0, 2007) are not as easily recalled as the six occasions on which Posh were humbled.

Posh first lost to a non-league club at Wigan Athletic in 1970 when a Bobby Moss goal proved a mere consolation in front 0f 17,000 at Springfield Park.

A much better Posh side, one competing well in the old Third Division, were next to suffer an embarrassing defeat, 4-0 at Northwich Victoria in 1976, although the scoreline only told part of the tale.

Winger Tommy Robson, who passed away earlier this year, played at Wigan and Northwich and told the PT a few years back: “I don’t remember the Wigan game very well, but Northwich game was a disaster. We were winning the tie 1-0 and comfortable when it was abandoned because of fog and when we went back up there were too complacent and got stuffed!”

Posh have since lost 1-0 at Dagenham in a 1984 tie famous for crowd trouble, a wall collapse and the referee failing to add time on for a five-minute pitch invasion, 3-1 at home to Sutton United in 1987, 1-0 at Burton Albion in a 2005 replay and 3-2 at home to Kidderminster Harriers in a third round replay in 2014 after a 0-0 draw at Aggborough.

Sutton were the first non-league side to knock Posh out of the FA Cup at London Road in a game which featured a goal at each end for striker Les Lawrence.

The Burton defeat was the last time Posh were knocked out at the first round stage. Mark Wright was the Posh manager at the time. The teams had drawn 0-0 at Posh.
