For a bit of fun in the meantime, we fired up the latest edition of Football Manager, and simulated the game beyond the summer and into the future. We had a look at the starting XI, key subs and manager it predicts will be on show for the Posh on the opening day of the 2020/21 campaign.

2. GK: Joao Virginia
After a frustrating loan spell with Reading in 2019/20, Everton decided to give their young stopper a crack in the third tier. He starts between the sticks for the Posh. Photo: Alex Burstow
3. RB: Jason Naismith
After recovering from a knee injury, the Scotsman breaks into the first team, with Niall Mason sidelined due to an ankle problem. Photo: Jordan Mansfield
4. CB: Jonathan Dinzeyi
