How Peterborough United would fare under the points-per-game formula employed by English Rugby Union to determine their final league tables

Peterborough United statistician Mick Robinson has worked out how the League One table would look if the EFL used the same ‘points-per-game’ formula English Rugby Union followed to compile their final tables.

A simple points per game average based on current standings doesn’t take into account the number of home and away games each team has left to play.

The formula applied by the English rugby union worked out the average number of points gained from home games and away games separately so far this season.

Those averages are then applied to the remaining home and away games to give a fairer final table average.

For example Posh have an average of 2.294pts per home game this season and an away points average of 1.111. Posh have five games at home left and four away games so based on this average would pick up a further 11.47 points at home and 4.44 points away from home. Add those to the current points total and divide by 44 games to find the new points-per-game average!

Posh would drop out of the play-off places under a simple points per game average. This formula delivers a different result.

Voiding the current season and applying a points-per-game average to work out promotion, play-off and relegation issues is one one the suggestions lower league EFL clubs are reportedly considering.
