How Peterborough United can take their promotion bid to the next level and Ipswich would be a great place to start

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson insists his team must reach the next level in their bid for promotion from League One by improving their away record, starting at rivals Ipswich Town tomorrow (January 23, 3pm kick off).

Posh have the best home record in League One, but only the 12th-best away record having won four and lost five of their 11 fixtures on the road.

Posh do take excellent momentum into the match at Portman Road having won their last two matches during an unbeaten run of seven games in all competitions.

Posh won 4-1 at Ipswich last season, but they haven’t picked up three points on their travels this term since they went top of League One with a 2-0 win at Bristol Rovers on November 3.

“We’re in a good place right now,” Ferguson stated. “The players were buoyant in the dressing room after beating Charlton on Tuesday night and that’s a feeling they need to remember and to repeat.

“We have good momentum, we are in excellent form at home and the players’ standards have been high in matches and during training since the turn of the year, but we now need to take this promotion bid to the next level and that means we need to start winning away from home.

“This is not the time to ease up. This is the time to put our foot down and use the momentum we have.

“Obviously it’s a tough game for us tomorrow, but it’s a game to look forward to. Ipswich is a lovely club. It’s a great stadium and the pitch is good. They have an experienced manager, they have good players back from injury and they have signed a couple of good attacking players this week.

“We will be facing a stronger Ipswich side than the one we would have faced at our place in December so it will be a very hard fixture.

“I don’t change though. I know if we are at it we are a very tough side to beat in League One.”
