The 29 year-old has signed a contract until January with League Two high fliers Carlisle United.

Bennett was one of the 24 Posh players signed by Steve Evans in his 11 months in charge at the Weston Homes Stadium. He followed Evans from Mansfield in the summer of 2018.

The centre-back played strongly as Posh started well in League One under Evans, but his style of play was never likely to find favour with Darren Ferguson who became Posh boss in February, 2019.

Ferguson likes his centre-backs to bring the ball out of defence so the arrival of Frankie Kent from Colchester meant the writing was on the wall for Bennett. Experienced centre half Mark Beevers also signed for Posh that summer.

Bennett only started seven times last season, but Ferguson was always happy with the player’s attitude and commitment in matches and in training, describing him as ‘an excellent team man.’

Bennett made 63 appearances for Posh and scored four goals.

Bennett could make his debut at home to Carlisle’s promotion rivals Cheltenham Town on Saturday (November 14).
