Maddison threatened to quit professional football at the age of 27 yesterday (April 12) after being ‘broken by all the abuse, monotony and pressures of the last two years.’

Maddison’s loan spell at League Two Bolton Wanderers had just been ended by mutual consent. Maddison left Posh in January, 2020 and subsequently joined Hull and then Charlton before moving on to Bolton last January.

Ferguson said: “I will contact Marcus today to see if he wants to talk about things. I always got on well with the boy and I just hope the talk of quitting was a severe emotional reaction to a disappointing time for him.

“It would be a crying shame if a player so talented stopped playing at such a young age, but he clearly has some problems and I really feel for him.

“It didn’t work out for him at Charlton and I felt a move to Bolton would be good form him, but he’s obviously found it difficult.

“Marcus is a very headstrong individual. He’s never really cared what people think about him, but I hope he can get through this and resume his career.

“I have to say Bolton appear to have handled the situation perfectly.”
