Cooper (23) signed a three-year contract at Home Park yesterday after finding himself surplus to requirements at Posh.

Plymouth manager Ryan Lowe told the Plymouth Herald today (September 3): “A big thanks to Peterborough and especially my good friend Barry Fry.

“They were sensible and we were sensible. Obviously, we had to deal with George and one thing I will say is the boy has taken a big paycut to come here because of the circumstances surrounding the salary cap and everything else.

“He wanted to be here. He wanted to play for me as a manager and my staff, and ultimately the football club.

“We had to broker a deal. Me and Barry were speaking on a regular basis and common sense prevailed. He wasn’t going to play for them and he has got every chance of playing for me.

“When we knew we could potentially strike a deal then it was a no-brainer. George has left a lot of money to come here, but he knows he can eventually get back to that in years to come.”

Posh and Plymouth agreed an undiclosed fee for Cooper who started just 16 games at London Road following a £300k transfer from Crewe in January, 2018.

Posh are now keen to offload midfielders George Boyd and Louis Reed, plus full-back Jason Naismith to give themselves room to manouevre within the limits of the salary cap.
