Barring some unlikely pangs of conscience the Peterborough United season is over as the numbers just don’t add up, so sham promotions and unjust relegations it is

Peterborough United’s 2019-20 fate is the hands of League One rivals with club director of football Barry Fry admitting it would take ‘a miracle’ for the Posh season to continue.

Twelve votes (51%) are required to continue or curtail the season. Remarkably given the length of this debate already the clubs have been given until 5pm Tuesday (May 26) to reflect on which way to vote and they then apparently have five days to cast that vote (if needed)! There’s also the possibility of clubs calling an EGM, if they don’t like the way it’s going or going to go.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has called for all clubs to make public which way they vote.

Earlier this week League One journalists revealed which way they thought their clubs would vote and we found nine clubs

who wanted the season to continue: (Bristol Rovers, Fleetwood, Gillingham, Ipswich, Lincoln, Oxford, Portsmouth, POSH, and Sunderland), eight who wanted the season to be halted (Accrington Stanley, Burton Albion, Coventry City, Rochdale, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury, Southend, Wycombe) and six who remained undecided: (AFC Wimbledon, Blackpool, Bolton, Doncaster, MK Dons, Tranmere).

This survey was undertaken before the EFL decided to make it a two-way vote between continuing or curtailing at their Board meeting on Wednesday. League One are represented on the Board by Fleetwood and Burton Albion.

Clearly the six undecided votes are key, but only if the nine who wanted to continue remain firm which is now thought to be unlikely. Gillingham manager Steve Evans has already stated his desire to continue, but he doesn’t cast his club’s vote. Fleetwood, Oxford and Pompey might now decide to cut and run and take their chances in the play-offs, although all should believe they can overhaul a jittery Rotherham side with the hardest run-in of any of the promotion contenders.

Rather bizarrely Wycombe will vote to curtail the season for 19 clubs, but then actually carry on themselves by contesting the play-offs.

Of the six who were undecided Posh can count on Tranmere to vote to carry on as they would also be shafted by a points-per-game formula and be relegated even though they are just three points from safety and have a game in hand on the team above them, AFC Wimbledon. It’s a safe bet Wimbledon will vote to curtail for that very reason.

Doncaster could vote to play on as they have the games in hand to launch a late dash for the play-offs, but there seems little incentive for Blackpool, Bolton or MK Dons to carry on unless they place sporting integrity ahead of sham promotions and unjust relegations.

Barring some unlikely pangs of conscience the Posh season is done. It will be Wycombe v Fleetwood and Oxford v Portsmouth in the play-off semi-finals with Posh a frustrated onlooker.
