Posh led 2-1 thanks to goals from George Cooper and Joe Ward at half-time but conceded two controversial second-half goals to slip to defeat.

But club manager Steve Evans was happy enough with the performance hours after he’d challenged the players to stake claims for first-team places.

“There were some very good performances against a very strong Notts County team,” Evans said.

Posh dominated the opening stages and took the lead through a terrific Cooper strike. Goalkeeper Conor O’Malley made a fine save to preserve the lead before Terry Hawkridge equalised midway through the half.

Ward driled home a right-foot shot to put Posh back in front before the break, but Nathan Thomas equalised in the second-half while two Posh players were on the floor injured before Kristian Dennis won the game for County after appearing to foul O’Malley.

Calum Cooke, Mark O’Hara, who hit the post with a header from a corner, Ward, Louis Reed, Josh Yorwerth and Darren Lyon all played well for Posh.
