Peterborough Sports hit Stourbridge for six, five wins in a row for Yaxley, late winner for Stamford and Deeping Rangers knock Holbeach off the top, Peterborough Northern Star and Whittlesey make excellent points

It’s a surprise that anyone is now surprised when Peterborough Sports deliver a result designed to make the rest of the Southern League Premier Division Central sit up and take notice.

The club have made their first season at step three level an absolute triumph, but yesterday’s 6-1 drubbing of Stourbridge must be the most impressive result of the campaign.

Stourbridge are a big club at this level - they reached the first round of the FA Cup this season - and over 500 fans turned out to see them taken apart by Sports.

Josh Moreman opened the scoring after three minutes and a Dioan Sembie-Ferris strike enabled Sports to take a 2-1 lead into the break before the city side ran riot in the second half.

Sembie-Ferris completed a hat-trick with Josh McCammon and Cameron Johnson also on target. Sports remain third, but are just three points off the top with games in hand ahead of a home match with lowly Alvechurch next Saturday (February 8).

Yaxley are also enjoying an excellent campaign in Division One Central. The Cuckoos made it five wins in a row and seventh place in the table with a 3-1 home success over North Leigh yesterday. Charlie Johnson, Ross Watson and Dan Cotton scored the goals.

Stamford AFC consolidated second spot in the South East Division of the Northern Premier League with a 2-1 win at third-placed Cleethorpes Town. Tendai Chitoza grabbed the winner two minutes from time after Sean Wright had given the Daniels the lead in the first half.

Deeping Rangers beat neighbours Holbeach United 2-0 in the big game in the United Counties Premier Division thanks to two goals from in-form Tom Garrick. The result knocked Holbeach, who were losing a league game for the first time since September, down from first to fifth in a competitive division.

Mid-table Peterborough Northern Star gained a creditable 1-1 draw at Leicester Nirvana thanks to a Craig Smith goal.

Whittlesey Athletic picked up an excellent point from a 0-0 draw at Division One high fliers Bugbrooke St Michael, but Blackstones were well beaten at new leaders Long Buckby.

March won 1-0 at Sheringham with a Craig Gillies goal in Division One North of the Eastern Counties League. The Hares are fifth.
