Any doubts the city side weren’t challengers for top spot were dispelled by last weekend’s 6-1 rout of Stourbridge away from home. Sports had beaten leaders Tamworth 4-2 in their previous outing.

Third-placed Sports are now five points behind Tamworth from the same number of games played, but are just three points behind second-placed Bromsgrove Sporting with two games in hand.

Sports host lowly Alvechurch at the Bee Arena tomorrow (February 8, 3pm).

“I’m making no predictions, but the last two results have shown we belong in the promotion race,” Sports boss Jimmy Dean said.

“The boys were excellent at Stourbridge. They couldn’t live with us. We were just as dominant in the home game against them when we only drew 2-2, but this time the boys were ruthless.

“To stick 10 goals past two of the strongest teams in the league is a fantastic achievement and we really do look a good side right now.

“The club has consolidated and want to progress. I’ve committed to next season already and we have tied a couple of top players down.

“We must be careful on Saturday though. We lost badly to struggling Hitchin recently and we have found Alvechurch hard work in two matches this season. We came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at their place and that result was the start of our charge up the table. They are a very resilient side so we might have to be patient.”

Sembie-Ferris and Maniche Sani are the players to have recently extended contracts to the end of next season.

Sports have another big game at play-off chasing Rushden & Diamonds next Tuesday (February 11).
