Sports sped into a second minute lead when Maniche Sani followed up to convert after the visiting goalkeeper had spilled Josh Moreman’s shot and the city side’s task became even easier soon afterwards when Barwell were reduced to 10 men by a straight red card.

Further first-half goals from Paul Malone and Dan Lawlor (penalty) and a second-half penalty save from Lewis Elsom secured a first win of the league season for Sports who next take on fellow Premier Division side Banbury United in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup at the Bee Arena on Tuesday (October 13). Sports will hope to exceed today’s decent crowd of 247 in Tuesday’s match.

It was also FA Vase day for local clubs and Whittlesey Athletic claimed an historic 2-0 win over Debenham LC at Feldale Field. It was the first Vase tie in Whittlesey’s history and goals from Matthew Simpson and Jack Carter made sure it was a happy one.

Stamford AFC’s scintillating and free-scoring form continued with a 5-0 romp at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels in front of a crowd of 311. Tom Siddons (2), Cosmos Matwasa, Harry Limb and James Hicks scored for the Daniels who are third in the South East Division of the Northern Premier League after scoring 17 goals and taking 10 points from their opening four matches.

Spalding United and Wisbech Town lost their South-East Division home games. Wisbech, who were thumped 4-0 by Frickley Athletic, are rooted to the bottom after five defeats in five matches.
