An early goal from Peterborough Northern Star’s Phil Stebbing settled last night’s ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties Premier Division derby at Yaxley last night (April 7)

Stebbing accepted a pull-back from Luke Avis in the ninth minute and delivered a crisp, low shot into the corner of the net.

Star dominated the first-half and came close to extending their advantage when Luke Hunnings saw his set-piece header well saved by Yaxley ‘keeper Aaron Butcher.

Stebbing headed against the crossbar in the second-half and Avis almost scored with an acrobatic overhead kick. Both players almost scored again before a late rally from the home side saw reigning Peterborough Telegraph footballer-of-the-year Dan Cotton and Ricky Hailstone come close.

It was a fine comeback from Star who had lost 6-1 at Sleaford over the weekend (a team they had out nine goals past earlier in the season) and had been beaten heavily in the reverse fixture against The Cuckoos over Christmas, but Yaxley’s hopes of a best-ever third place Premier Division finish now look to be over.

Yaxley are fourth, seven points behind third-placed Wisbech with just three matches to go.

Yaxley: Aaron Butcher, Luke Hipwell, Lewis Stone, Kyle Nolan (sub Ricky Hailstone), Dalton Bettles, Gav Cooke, Jacob Joyce, Scott Carter, Andy Furnell (sub Casey Logan), Liam Hook, Dan Cotton.

Peterborough Northern Star: Dan George, Michael Mackrell, Matt Porter, Sam Murphy, Luke Hunnings, Edson Fernandes, Jordan Macleod, Luke Avis (sub Aaron Warrener), Hayden Bream. Phil Stebbing, Jason Kilbride (sub Ben Catanach).

Riverside scored three second-half goals through Sam Donohoe (2) and Joshua Kamau to over-turn a half-time deficit and win 3-1 at Peterborough Sports Reserves in the Peterborough Premier Division.

Premier Division leaders Oakham will extend their lead to seven points with victory over local rivals Uppingham tonight. There are also top flight games at Moulton Harrox and Holbeach.

In Division Two unbeaten ICA Sports A dropped points for just the second time this season last night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Coates Athletic A. Kyle Orange scored for ICA who are three points behind leaders Spalding United Reserves, but have three games in hand. Spalding beat rock-bottom Guyhirn 12-0 last night.

In Division Three Hampton got their promotion bid back on track following a disappointing weekend result by beating Farcet 5-2. Simon Johnson, Kelvin Fletcher, Aaron Sawyer and Lee Deane scored their goals.

The PFA Sunday Senior Cup Final between hot favourites Parkway and Bretton North End takes place at Chestnut Avenue tonight (7.30pm kick-off).
