Stamford AFC are closing in on the capture of a former England C international.
Andy Burgess, who won eight caps for his country, played for the Daniels in their opening pre-season friendly last night (Wednesday) and boss David Staff hopes to tie up a deal for the 32 year-old.
Burgess won the League Two and Blue Square Premier Division titles during a successful career at Rushden & Diamonds. He also played for Oxford, Luton and Mansfield, and won eight caps for his country.
Staff said: “I’ve known Andy for a few years and he is a signing I would like to make.
“He has been out of the game for a year but is keen to get back playing and he offers something different to what we’ve already got at the club.”
Burgess played in the Daniels’ 3-2 victory over AFC Rushden & Diamonds at Kettering Road. Summer signings Jordan Smith, Tom Liversedge and Alvin Jarvis hit their goals.
Former Daniels favourite Jon Challinor appeared as a second-half substitute.
The locally-based ace, who had a spell as a Stamford player more than a decade ago, is searching for a new club after being released by League Two side York City at the end of last season.
Staff added: “Jon is still more than capable of playing a good level.
“He just wants to get some game time under his belt and we’ll see how the situation develops.”
Posh youth goalkeeper Alex Lynch was between the sticks for Stamford. He will also play when they make the short trip across town to Blackstones on Saturday (July 20).
Stamford have more friendlies against local sides next week. They travel to Deeping on Tuesday (July 23) before hosting Holbeach next Saturday (July 27).
