It was another perfect day (November 14) for runaway United Counties Division One leaders Peterborough Sports.
The city side had to battle hard before making it 14 wins in 14 games against in-form ON Chenecks at PSL, but after their 2-1 come-from-behind triumph they were boosted further by the performances of local rivals Blackstones and Bourne who took points off top four sides.
Sports conceded a second-minute goal to the team that started the day in fourth place and David Cobb didn’t deliver the equaliser until a further hour had passed. Sports won the game with an own goal 15 minutes from time.
And their lead at the top is now already a staggering 13 points after second-placed Stewart & Lloyds were suprisingly beaten 3-2 at Blackstones. The Corby-based side led 2-1 with five minutes to go before Rhys Ford and Steve Mastin, who was on loan from Peterborough Premier Division side Netherton United for the day, turned the game on its head. Dan Evans had claimed the first Stones goal.
And Rushden & Higham United, who were third at the start of play, also lost ground after conceding a two-goal advantage at home to Bourne. Zak Munton scored twice in the final quarter of the game to give ‘The Wakes’ a share of the spoils from a 2-2 draw.
It was also a decent day all round in the Premier Division for local sides as Deeping Rangers, Peterborough Northern Star, Yaxley and Wisbech all registered home wins, while Holbeach reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 2-1 win at fellow high fliers Kirby Muxloe. Jake Clitheroe scored both goals for Holbeach.
Deeping are up to fifth after thumping Northampton Spencer 5-1 at Outgang Road. Scott Coupland took his top flight goals tally to 18 for the season with two in this game, while Jason Kilbride also netted twice. David Burton-Jones completed the scoring from the penalty spot.
Yaxley went one goal better as they saw off Oadby 6-3 at In2itive Park. Dan Cotton and Jon Stead each scored twice with former Posh striker Andy Furnell also on target.
A first-half goal from Rob Hughes was enough for Wisbech to see off Cogenhoe and stretch the unbeaten run of the Fenmen to five games.
Peterborough Northern Star almost threw away a commanding lead for the second time in a week before edging home 4-3 against Sileby Rangers at Chestnut Avenue.
A hat-trick from Jacob Joyce and a stunning individual goal from Declan Rogers - he scored after collecting the ball in his own half - handed Star a 4-0 lead before the visitors caused a scare by scoring three times in the final 20 minutes. Star had led 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 against Harrowby in their previous outing before losing 5-4.
In the Evo Stik Northern Premier Division it wasn’t a case of third time lucky for new boss Graham Drury as Stamford went down 3-1 at Frickley. Drury has started a third stint as manager of ‘The Daniels’, but he couldn’t stop a rotten run of results even though Shawn Richards gave his side a lead at half-time.
Stamford remain next-to-bottom and are already seven points from safety.
Spalding United coiuld be heading in the other direction as they are just one point off a play-off place in Division One South after winning 3-0 at Leek Town. Jake Newman, Paul Walker and Josh Moreman scored the Spalding goals as ‘The Tulips won for the second straight game in the league for caretaker-manager Marcus Ebdon.
Ebdon, a former Posh midfielder, has held talks with the Spalding board about taking the manager’s job on a permanent basis.
