Nine-man Peterborough Northern Star lost a nine-goal thriller in the United Counties Premier Division at Chestnut Avenue last night (November 10).

Star looked set to claim all three points as they led Harrowby United by two goals on three separate occasions, but the loss of Luke Smith and Craig Smith to red cards when conceding penalties proved costly. The visitors eventually won the game in the 87th minute.

Harry Fitzjohn headed the city side in front in the sixth minute with Jacob Joyce doubling their lead after just 15 minutes. Hayden Bream and Craig Smith - when they were dowwn to 10 men - also scored to put Star 3-1 and 4-2 ahead before the late capitulation.

Star are now down to 10th place, just behind Wisbech and Yaxley, Wisbech, who are now unbeaten in four games, came from behind twice to snatch a draw at Deeping Rangers with stunning goals from Rob Hughes and Steven Reid. Deeping’s great Scotts, Mooney and Coupland, had twice put the home side ahead.

Yaxley’s poor form continued with a 2-1 home defeat to Sleaford. Jon Stead’s 88th-minute goal proved a mere consolation for the Cuckoos.

Huntingdon conceded eight second half goals on their way to a 9-0 defeat at AFC Kempston Rovers,

There was rare joy for managerless Stamford AFC who made progress in the Doodson Cup - the knockout competition for Evo Stik League sides - with a 1-0 win at Coalville.

It was a tricky tie for the Daniels who are next-to-bottom of the Premier Division against a side pushing for promotion from Division One South. Andrew Phillips scored the only goal midway through the second-half when heading home a corner from caretaker-manager Jon Challinor.

Spalding are out though. The Tulips, under the caretaker-management of former Posh star Marcus Ebdon, went down 4-3 on penalties to higher-division Matlock Town at the Sir Halley Stewart Field. It was 0-0 after 90 minutes despite Matlock playing most of the second half with 10 men following a red card, but Jamie Graham and Jake Newman missed their penalties for Spalding.

Ebdon met with the Spalding board after the game. An announcement on the new Tulips manager is expected before the weekend.
