Wisbech Town’s title hopes in the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division were all but ended by a heavy defeat yesterday (April 4).
The Fenmen were walloped 5-1 at Desborough Town and now trail leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds by seven points with five games to go.
Josh Ford scored the Wisbech goal from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.
Peterborough Northern Star also suffered a big loss. They went down 6-1 at Sleaford Town after taking an early lead through Phil Stebbing.
Holbeach United and Huntingdon Town also tasted defeat. Holbeach were beaten 3-1 at Northampton Sileby Rangers with Gary King on target while Huntingdon slipped up 2-1 at home to Oadby Town despite finding the back of the net after just three minutes through Roberto Da Silva.
On a brighter note Yaxley smashed bottom club Long Buckby 5-0 with Dan Cotton claiming a hat-trick. Scott Carter also scored with an Elliott Herbert own goal completing the rout.
In Division One, Peterborough Sports saw their promotion prospects take a knock as they lost 3-2 at Thrapston Town. They fought back from 2-0 down to level through Gary Gibbs and Jack Barron but Thrapston nicked the points with a goal 10 minutes from time.
Blackstones lost 2-0 at Bugbrooke St Michaels.
Stamford were unable to ease their relegation fears in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division. They lost 2-0 at home to Ashton United.
Spalding won 1-0 at Kidsgrove Athletic in Division One South thanks to a goal after 15 minutes by Thomas Waumsley.
