Peterborough Sports jumped into second place in Division One of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League with a 5-0 thrashing of local rivals Blackstones last night (January 21).
All the Sports goals came in the second half after an evenly contested first 45 minutes.
The breakthrough came three minutes into the second period. Dan Clements collected a Karl Gibbs lay-off, drifted past two defenders and cleverly chipped the ball into the top right-hand corner.
The lead was doubled after 62 minutes when Matt Barber went down under the challenges of Jack Travers and Giuliano Staffieri for a soft spot-kick. Ali Nyang’s powerful strike from the spot found the net despite John Feetham getting a hand to the shot.
Nyang headed wide at the far post from a Barber corner but a third goal arrived on 74 minutes, again from the spot. Seb Hood’s challenge on Ondre Odain was deemed illegal and Nyang rolled his kick low into the opposite corner to his previous penalty.
Barber put his name on the scoresheet after 76 minutes, finishing from distance after taking a return pass from Dan Clements.
The scoring was completed three minutes from time by Karl Gibbs who controlled an Ondre Odain cross and slipped his marker before firing past Feetham.
