Yaxley ruined former manager Brett Whaley’s return to In2itive Park with a five-star display against Wisbech in the United Counties Premier Division last night (August 25).

Whaley’s Wisbech started the game as league leaders, but that honour now goes to the Cuckoos as Dan Cotton, the reigning Peterborough Telegraph player-of-the-year, grabbed a hat-trick in a 5-0 romp.

It wasn’t a pleasant return to Yaxley for goalkeeper Aaron Butcher either as the highly-rated shot-stopper was at fault for the 30th minute goal from Scott Carter that put the home side in front.

Cotton made it 2-0 before the break from the penalty spot and two goals in one second-half minute from Liam Hook and Cotton made the game safe. Cotton completed his hat-trick in the final minute.

A first defeat of the season for Wisbech dropped them to fifth place.

There was more misery for Peterborough Northern Star who have yet to win a Premier Division game.

They went down 3-2 at home to Boston Town despite two goals from Jacob Joyce. Joyce opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but his second goal was a consolation after Star’s Harry Fitzjohn had been sent off.

Huntingdon already look a team in trouble. They were crushed 8-0 at Wellingborough,

AFC Stamford bounced back from a traumatic first week in the Northern Premier Division of the Evo Stik League. Two goals from Cameron Powell and another from Greg Smith saw them to a 3-1 win at Halesowen - their first success after three defeats.

Daniels’ keeper Richard Knight saved a penalty at a crucial stage in the first half.

Spalding threw away a 2-0 lead at Sheffield in Division One North. Josh Moreman and substitute Charlie Saunders, on his debut, saw the Tulipes two goals to the good, but a 75th minute penalty and a last-minute header meant they had to settle for a point.
