Yaxley and Holbeach warmed up for their big FA Vase dates next weekend (January 17 & 18) with impressive United Counties Premier Division wins yesterday (January 10).
Holbeach are now just two points off top spot with two games in hand on leaders Rushden & Diamonds following a 3-0 win over Kempston at Carter’s Park. Rushden surprisingly went down 1-0 at Oadby.
Jake Duffy, the matchwinner against Yaxley last week, scored twice more against Kempston while Jamie Clarke also found the target.
Yaxley were a goal down at half-time at home to Newport Pagnell and staring at back-to-back League defeats for the first time this season, but goals from John-Paul Duncliffe and David Cobb turned the game on its head just after the hour mark. Yaxley are third, five points ahead of Peterborough Northern Star who were comfortable 2-0 winners at Harborough Town. Phil Stebbing claimed his 21st goal of the season for Star before Dan Banister completed the scoring.
Fifth-placed Wisbech have the games in hand to take an interest in the title race and they kept in touch yesterday with a 3-2 win at Wellingborough Town. All the goals arrived in the second-half with Tommy Treacher scoring twice for the Fenmen.
Jezz Goldson-Williams’ hat-trick saw Deeping Rangers to a 3-1 win at Long Buckby. Both sides were reduced to 10 men before half-time following an off-the-ball incident with Spencer Tinkler seeing red for Deeping.
City man Stuart Eason celebrated his return to Huntingdon with a goal, but his out-of-form team went down 2-1 at Boston Town.
Peterborough Sports’ promotion challenge in Division One was dented again as they slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat at lowly Irchester. Sports have failed to score in five of their last seven matches, a problem that helped them to defeat against a side they beat 6-0 earlier in the campaign.
No such concerns for Bourne though who continued their excellent form with a 2-1 win Rushden & Higham. Harley Williams scored the winning goal for a team unbeaten in their last six games.
Spalding made it 10 wins on the spin with a 2-0 success over FC Sheffield in Division One South of the Evo Stik League. It was a good day for the fourth-placed Tulips as many of their promotion/play-off rivals dropped points. Jordan Hempenstall and Mitch Griffiths scored the Spalding goals against the oldest football club in the country.
Sadly Stamford failed to build on their excellent Premier Division win at high-flying Buxton last weekend. They went down 3-1 at home to Frickley despite Jordan Smith’s equalising goal in the first-half.
