Dan Clements eased Stamford’s relegation worries with a terrific treble in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division derby at Grantham this afternoon (April 6).

Clements blasted three goals in a superb first half for the Daniels with Richard Jones also heading home to make it 4-0 at the break. Gregg Smith saw a weak penalty saved by the Grantham ‘keeper at the start of the second-half and within minutes Grantham converted a penalty, but there were no further goals.

It was a first win in 11 matches for Stamford who moved out of the relegation zone, but they will need to pick up points in their final three games to stay out of trouble.

There was also a good win for promotion play-off chasers Spalding in Division One South.

They also enjoyed a cracking first half against visitors Lincoln United, turning round 3-0 up through strikes by former Posh player Matt Nolan, Dan Banister and man-of-the-match Nathan Stainfield. The second=half was goalless and Spalding remain fourth in the table.

In the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Premier Division, there were no goals in the game between Wisbech and Holbeach while Deeping won 2-1 at Boston thanks to a Spencer Tinkler equaliser from the penalty spot and a 76th minute winner from Jamie Graham. Deeping also had Joe Braithwaite red-carded with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

It’s been a dismal Easter weekend for Wisbech who couldn’t convert any of numerous chances at the Fenland Stadium. For a 0-0 it was an action-packed contest with both teams claiming they were denied a blatant spot-kick. Wisbech have now lost second place to Thurnby Nirvana, but both teams are nine points behind champions-elect AFC Rushden & Diamonds who could wrap up the title this weekend (April 11).

Huntingdon’s miserable run continued as they were walloped 5-0 at Eynesbury.

In Division One, second-placed Peterborough Sports romped to a 7-1 win at bottom club S&L Corby while Bourne came from behind to beat Blackstones 2-1. Martin Holyoak scored a first-half penalty for Blackstones and Zak Munton levelled on the hour mark for Bourne before Aaron Jesson struck the decider in a keenly-contested derby.

Sports are back up into second place after goals from Jack Barron (2), Jon Stead, Ali Nyang, Matty Cox, Gary Gibbs and Matt Simpson against the division’s whipping boys, but it will only be a temporary status as teams with games in hand are queuing up to overtake them.

March drew 0-0 at Team Bury in Thurlow Nunn Division One.

There’s a United Counties Premier Division derby at Yaxley tonight when Peterborough Northern Star are the visitors.

Tomorrow night (April 8) sees the final of the PFA Sunday Senior Cup between Parkway and Bretton North End at Chestnut Avenue (7.30pm).
