Deeping Rangers, last season’s beaten finallists, were knocked out of the United Counties League Cup 4-1 by Yaxley at the third round stage last night (February 10).
Deeping took the lead in the second minute through Mohammed Hamid, but within 10 minutes Yaxley were in front as Liam Hook and Scott Carter found the net in quick succession. Dan Cotton, the Peterborough Telegraoh Footballer of the Year for 2014, made it 3-1 from the penalty spot before Hook grabbed his second of the night.
Yaxley now face a tasty quarter-final against Premier Division leaders Rushden & Diamonds at In2itive Park.
Wisbech also roared into the last eight with a five-star second-half showing against Peterborough Northern Star at Chestnut Avenue.
The in-form Fenmen booked a quarter-final date with Premier Division rivals Cogenhoe thanks to a hat-trick from Josh Ford and two goals in two minutes from Matt Lunn. Depleted Star battled well to keep the game goalless in the first-half, but were denied a consolation goal when Nick Davey struck a post from the penalty spot.
Peterborough Sports should continue their promotion push from Division One with victory at Blackstones tonight (February 11). Sports revealed a transfer coup yesterday as they persuaded former Star midfielder Jonathan Stead to step down a couple of levels from St Ives.
Premier Division title challengers Holbeach have a tricky trip to face Ian Edge’s Huntingdon Town. Holbeach will be keen for a morale-boosting win ahead of their last-16 FA Vase tie with Erith & Belvedere at Carter’s Park on Saturday (February 14) when a quarter-final tie at home to North Shields is the prize.
