NON-LEAGUE: Sports sign a lethal marksman, great Grimsby win for Daniels
Peterborough Sports believe that have signed a goal-scoring machine in lethal marksman Mark Jones.
Jones has dropped down a couple of levels to play for the city side in the United Counties Premier Division.
And he’s made a stunning first impression by scoring six goals in 130 minutes of friendly action so far this summer.
Jones scored twice in a 45-minute appearance in a 5-2 win at Bourne, a hat-trick in 55 minutes in an impressive 3-0 win over Welwyn and one more in a brief apearance during a 6-0 win at Potton on Tuesday (July 12).
“Mark is a machine,” Sports manager Jimmy Dean enthused. “He’s good in the air, quick and his finishing is lethal. His attitude is also spot on. He’s a gifted lad who also works hard.
“I played with Mark at Peterborough Northern Star a few years ago when he hardly got into our team, but he’s improved beyond recognition.”
Dean has taken his team to Prague this weekend for the club’s first-ever fixture in Europe!
Sports take on Prague League champions Predni Kopinina tomorrow (July 16) during a trip when the football won’t be a priority.
Sports are only taking the bare 11 players so a tough game is certain.
“It’s more about team-bonding for me,” Dean added. “I doubt there will be a closer-knit squad than mine at our level and a weekend away can only help.
“We will take the game seriously and we want to give a good account of ourselves, but we will be going out tonight!”
Leading Peterborough Premier Division side Netherton host United Counties Premier Division side Deeping Rangers at the Grange tomorrow (12.3pm).
Netherton warmed up with a 3-1 win against a Whittlesey Athletic side that included former Posh players Gareth Jelleyman and Daniel French, and Ian Bradbury, who scored the Whittlesey goal, and Billy King from last season’s Premier Division champions Moulton Harrox.
Bradbury and King have since signed deals to play for Whittlesey who will compete in United Counties Division One next season.
Spalding United travel to Boston United for a Lincs Senior Trophy tie tomorrow. Stamford scored a superb win in this competition on Wednesday (July 13) when beating League Two side Grimsby 2-1 thanks to a last-gasp header from Tom Batchelor. Jordan Smith also scored for Stamford.
Bourne host Stamford for the Wilf Notley Cup on Monday (July 18).
