High-flying Peterborough Sports maintained their winning start to the season with more cup success last night (September 2)..
They followed up their superb FA Cup win at Newmarket Town on Saturday with a 3-1 win over UCL Division One rivals St Neots Saints in the first round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup. It was their sixth successive victory.
A bright Saints start saw Luke McShane save well from Sean Barker and Kelvin Osei-Addo turn smartly to fire against the post.
Sports took a 36th minute lead when Josh Sanders volleyed in a Matt Cook cross from close range.
Osei-Addo converted a Chris Lewis cross four minutes into the second half to square the tie.
Karl Gibbs had a header saved by home keeper Scott Davies and was then thwarted by a Lewis Strafford goalline clearance.
Avelino Vieira, on as a substitute for Sports, broke clear after 86 minutes to fire the visitors in front, and he sealed the Sports success a minute into added time.
In the UCL Premier Division, Deeping Rangers won the local derby at Wisbech 3-1.
Both teams had chances in the first period but there was no score at the break.
The Fenmen broke the deadlock through Stuart Cobb on the hour.
Three goals in eight minutes turned the game Deeping’s way.
Fraser Sturgess equalised after 68 minutes and five minutes later Billy Oliver put Rangers in front.
Deeping’s success was sealed by Sturgess’ second goal of the night after 76 minutes.
Holbeach won 1-0 at Boston Town thanks to a goal after 34 minutes by Chris Ward.
Tonight three local sides are in UCL Premier Division action. Table-toppers Yaxley are at Sleafird Town, Peterborough Northern Star visit Harrowby United and Huntingdon are at home to Kempston.
