NON LEAGUE FOOTBALL: A glorious FA Cup day for local sides and Whittlesey set a new league record
There was plenty to celebrate for the local sides on FA Cup duty yesterday (August 20) and for Whittlesey Athletic in the ChromaSport and Trophies United Counties League.
Peterborough Sports, Stamford, Spalding, Holbeach and Deeping were all victorious in FA Cup preliminary round ties while Yaxley drew.
High-flying Peterborough Sports, the UCL Premier Division leaders, beat Wisbech 4-1 in their tie at the Elgoods Stadium with goals by Mark Jones (2), Avelino Vieira and an own goal.
Wisbech had Paul Cousins sent off after 29 minutes for receiving two yellow cards. Their consolation goal on 80 minutes came from Edgaras Buzas.
Deeping Rangers were 2-1 winners at home to Wroxham thanks to two Scott Mooney goals while Stamford won 3-0 at Sleaford Town through strikes by Jordan Smith, Jake Duffy and Ryan Robbins.
Holbeach were 4-3 winners at Kirkley & Pakefield and completing the local run of success Spalding were 3-0 winners at Bury Town through goals by Bradley Wells (2) and Andrew Wright.
Yaxley face a replay at Dereham on Tuesday night after a thrilling 4-4 draw at In2itive Park.
In the UCL Premier Division, Peterborough Northern Star won 2-1 at home against Leicester Nirvana with goals from captain Wilkins Makate and Harley Williams.
Biggest talking point on the UCL front yesterday though was Whittlesey Athletic’s amazing victory at Burton Park Wanderers in Division One.
They won by a whopping 15-0 margin to set a new club and UCL record. The previous record was a 12-0 win by St Neots over Yaxley.
Amazingly Whittlesey, who are playing their first season in the UCL, never opened their account until the 32nd minute when Liam Harrold slotted a twice-taken penalty. He had also missed a spot-kick 10 minutes earlier. And it was only 3-0 at half-time.
But in the second half the floodgates opened as a very young Burton Park side collapsed.
Harrold, Jack Bates and Ian Bradbury all bagged hat-tricks in the rout with other goals coming from Adam Piergianni (2), Daniel French, Ollie Gale, Joe Butterworth and Louie Medwynter.
Elsewhere in Division One, Bourne lost 4-1 at home to Woodford United and Blackstones were pipped 2-1 at Daventry Town.
